Here's the hyena, all painted.

Again, like the proportions of the sculpture, the departure from realism in the paint job is deliberate.

This sculpture is about 8.5" tall, 9" long and is mounted on a painted wood base.

This was painted in part with my Badger Anthem airbrush using acrylic based airbrush paints, and detailing was done with a brush and regular acrylic paints. After all the painting was done, this got a coat of matte varnish, and then some gloss varnish here and there for accent.

It's a little less yellow in person, but I like the warmish cast in these photos, so I went with it.

Next sculpture? Either a cartoony badger or bull terrier.

Thanks for the comment. :)

There are plenty of tutorials online about sculpting, if you want to learn how to do it. A good one to start with is here: [link]

There are also some things in my scrap folder that you might find helpful/useful if you are wondering about the tools and materials I use.

How do I do it? I make a drawing of what I want to sculpt, I build an armature based on the drawing, and then I add clay to the armature, shape, carve, smooth, and texture it until I am happy with how it looks. It's as simple and difficult and as impossible to describe as that. ;)

Like I said, there are a few postings in my scrap folder (also in my gallery, collected under the folder "Sculpting Tools, Techniques, WIPs") that should answer those questions.
The materials listed in that section are pretty much what I use now, and are very similar to the materials used in the tutorial I linked in my first reply.
If you want to know what you need to get started, that's easy. You need clay (such as super sculpey or sculpey firm), armature wire, some tools to shape, smooth, carve and detail the clay, a base for your sculpture, and a concept in mind that you'd like to sculpt.

There are some WIP photos in my scraps, but I don't know that I'll ever have the discipline to do an in-depth tutorial since I'm usually so engrossed in sculpting that I forget to stop and take photos very often. Maybe the WIP photos will be helpful to you, though. :)

Also, you might be interested in this tutorial: [link] it was done by a sculptor far more skilled than I, and is pretty similar to how I build up my work.

Thanks for the comment, I'm honored that you enjoy my work! :D
